Sweetest Day Petit Fours
What better way to celebrate Sweetest Day than with rich chocolate sweets for your sweetie? And I don't mean the typical box of store-bought confections, which take little thought or effort and often lack in quality.
This Sweetest Day, give a gift that's unique, elegant, and personal. Surprise your special someone with homemade petit fours, and they'll know how much you care. Particularly when you use the Brownie Petit Fours recipe found below. (This recipe is just one of the many scrumptious recipes you'll find in the upcoming petit four recipes E-book, "Fabulous Petit Fours").
These luscious bites of dense brownie are draped in a thick chocolate coating. Nothing says "I love you" like these homemade treats. You can even spell out this message of endearment by writing each letter in frosting on top of eight petit fours. Arrange them in a gift box or on a heart shaped tray, and surround the "I love you" (or other message of your choice) by other petit fours decorated with a sprinkling of little candy hearts. Present them to your sweetie in front of a cozy fire, or after dinner at a candle-lit table, or with a romantic movie. Enjoy sharing the treats. You'll savor the memories -- and the surge of rich chocolate.
By the way, I made these for my boyfriend and he's now my husband.
Happy Sweetest Day!
Brownie Petit Fours
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2 tablespoons water
- 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Toppings of your choice, such as:
- Chopped peanuts
- Little candy heart sprinkles
- Frosting, for writing letters or drawing hearts
- Line an 8-in. or 9-in. square pan with parchment or waxed paper. Grease lightly.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, bring sugar, butter, and water to boil. Remove from the heat and stir in 1 cup chocolate chips till melted and smooth. Stir in vanilla. Cool about 5 minutes.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well. Stir together the dry ingredients; mix thoroughly into the chocolate mixture.
- Pour into the prepared pan and bake at 325º for 30-35 minutes or till a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
- Freeze for about 30 minutes (do not freeze solid).
- Invert and peel off the paper. Cut brownies into 1-in. squares.
- Make the Glaze: Melt remaining 2 cups chips with butter in a microwave or double boiler. Stir till smooth.
- Use a fork to dip the brownies to coat them completely, draining excess chocolate back into the bowl.
- Place brownies on waxed paper-lined trays and, if using chopped nuts or sprinkles to decorate, sprinkle these on while the chocolate is still wet. Let the chocolate set and harden. Decorate with frosting if desired.
- Store in a closed container in a cool place.
Variation: Substitute white chocolate for the 2 cups semisweet chocolate in the glaze.
